About ISTAXES
ISTAXES is an online tax software which assists international students in filing the 2007 nonresident tax return on Form 1040NR-EZ, the mandatory Form 8843, or applying for a refund for Social Security and Medicare tax on Form 843 and Form 8316. (more)

Tax Status
The first thing you must do before filing your tax returns is to determine whether you are a nonresident, resident or dual status alien for tax purposes. (more)

Tax Return for Nonresident Aliens

Nonresident aliens file their tax returns on Form 1040NR or Form 1040NR-EZ. Form 1040NREZ is an easy and convenient form that is used by most nonresident aliens. The deadline for filing Form 1040NR-EZ is April 15, 2008. (more)

Mandatory Form 8843
ALL international students must file Form 8843 to maintain their nonresident status. Even if students did not receive any type of income from U.S. sources, they are still required to file Form 8843. Form 8843 must be filed by June 15, 2008. (more)

Social Security and Medicare Taxes

International students are NOT subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes. Most students on Optional Practical Training, also known as OPT, have Social Security and Medicare taxes deducted from their paychecks. Students on OPT may file Form 843 and Form 8316 to receive a tax refund if they are unable to obtain it from their employers. There is no set deadline for filing Form 843 and Form 8316. (more)

Tax Treaty Benefits
Tax treaties reduce the taxes of foreign students working in United States. (more)

When to File?
If you were an employee and received wages subject to U.S. income tax withholding, file Form 1040 NR-EZ by April 15, 2008. If you were an international student and did not receive income, you must file Form 8843 by June 15, 2008.

Efile
Nonresident aliens are currently not allowed to efile their tax returns. All tax forms must be mailed to the IRS.

Where to File?
All nonresident tax returns must be mailed at the Internal Revenue Service Center, Austin, TX 73301-0215, U.S.A.

Where's my refund?
Click here to find out the status of your tax refund. If you have not received your refund within 28 days from the original IRS mailing date, you can find the status of your refund online.

Extension of Time to File
If you cannot file your Form 1040NR or Form 1040NR-EZ by the due date, you should file Form 4868 to receive an extension of time to file. You must file Form 4868 by the regular due date of the return.

Foreign Nationals
For foreign nationals filing Form 1040 NREZ other than international students and scholars we recommend the use of Global Tax Services to prepare their nonresident tax returns. (more)

State Taxes

If you have received income from U.S. sources, in addition to filing your federal tax return, you must also file state taxes. Some states do not require you to file a state tax return, while others offer free filing services for their taxpayers. (more)
